I’ve been on an AMV-watching binge recently and have come across some very fun ones through YouTube. Since most fans of anime can appreciate a good AMV, I decided to put together a small list. Please keep in mind that some of the single-show AMVs may contain big spoilers of the series:

Format:

AMV Title – Anime / Song (Band)

This is War – Code Geass / This is War (30 Seconds to Mars)

Around the World – Various Anime / Fireflies (Owl City)

Still Preoccupied with 1985 – Azumanga Daioh / 1985 (Bowling for Soup)

Mahou Shoujo Requiem – Puella Magi Madoka Magica / Cosmic Love (Florence and The Machine)

Only Violence – Death Note / Let It Burn (Red)

Ah yes, I remember the days when I used to watch these all the time in high school. They were like crack to me. I believe there are still competitions for them, where people enter their AMVs into contests.

I try to avoid watching AMVs for anime that I haven’t seen, since most of them contain major spoilers. I did watch the Code Geass, Azumanga Daioh, and Madoka Magica ones.

Out of those three, the Azumanga one is my favourite. I love Yukari sensei for her comedy and tardiness.

The Code Geass one apparently won an award, but I felt like it was still not as good as Azumanga.

I liked the Madoka Magica AMV, but that “three beat bass hit” that echoes throughout the video really got to me (where the frames sync to the three bass hits). It was okay at first, but then it started getting annoying.

    I miss seeing these :3

It’s incredibly hard to find AMVs that everybody likes, but there are a few old ones out there that are almost universally well-liked, one of them being this RahXephon one: http://youtu.be/XZO30DX1TrQ (spoilers, of course)

Like finding cool anime openings, I like watching a really good amv, especially the ones where you just know the creator poured dozens of hours putting it together.

The RahXephon AMV looks great. I can only imagine how much time was poured into making that one.

Wow, that Madoka one was awesome. Who knew Florence + The Machine would work so well for an AMV ^^
